Planning freeride in Japan? The season for legendary Japow is in full swing in January. That is why our camp for skiers and snowboarders in the Madarao Kogen and Myoko Kogen area on the island of Honshu (3–13 January 2027) guarantees a daily supply of powder and legal riding in the Tree Run forest. It is the perfect moment to catch peak conditions in the Japanese Alps – without the crowds known from Hokkaido. Cost of participation from €2,005.

Why is Madarao the best freeride in Japan? (And not Hokkaido)
Because there you do not play roulette with bans or logistical paralysis.
Hokkaido is overrated and overcrowded. Most resorts there ban riding in the forest under the threat of confiscating your lift pass. In addition, during heavy snowfalls local transport and country roads can stand still for days.
Unlike the north, Madarao and Myoko Kogen on the island of Honshu are a completely different story. The region is only 2 hours from Tokyo airport by the super-fast Shinkansen train, so you arrive reliably, quickly and without the risk of getting stuck in the countryside.
Snow, terrain and on-site care
Siberian air currents crossing the Sea of Japan collide with the high mountain ranges of Honshu, dumping gigantic amounts of powder here – so there is often even more of it than on the northern island. Most importantly: Madarao Kogen is the capital of legal freeride in Japan. It was the first resort to officially designate and prepare Tree Run Course zones for riding in deep snow between the trees. The official trail map is available on the Madarao Mountain Resort website.
Are you interested in safe and legal freeride in Japan? Our dates (3–13 January) guarantee a fresh supply of powder and are the ideal moment to catch peak conditions.
The contribution includes 7 days of freeride / slackcountry riding with lifts and local licensed guides, 8 nights (7 in the mountains with breakfasts + 1 in Tokyo), the Shinkansen journey and local transfers. However, flights are not included.
The terrain offers outstanding, fluffy snow, well-designed forest lines and relaxation in traditional onsens after riding. We stay in a comfortable hotel with breakfasts, from where we set out daily for the best spots in the area.

Comparison of camps and costs
How does the Freeride Transfer Club contribution compare with agencies from Poland and abroad?
Organising a trip on your own (for 1–2 people) involves very high costs of cars, fuel, more expensive hotels and hiring a guide (approx. €690 – €910 per day for the group). Such a trip pays off only with a well-matched group of 4–5 people – but if even one person drops out, the costs of the others rise drastically. In addition, commercial foreign and Polish agencies add high margins. Thanks to the non-profit formula our camp is hard to beat:
| Organizer / Trip option | Region | Estimated trip cost | Accommodation & meals | Logistics & guides / coaching |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freeride Transfer Club (our camp) 7 riding days |
Madarao & Myoko (Honshu) | €2,005 – €2,370 | 2/3* hotel ski-in / ski-out with breakfasts on site (2 per room) | Fast Shinkansen train, local licensed guides (1:6) + team leader. Lowest contribution with the Premium Card. |
| Individual trip (1–2 people on their own) | Any (Honshu / Hokkaido) | €3,430 – €4,220 | Hotels / lodgings (high cost of a single room or a room for a couple) | Hiring guides yourself (very expensive for 1–2 people), no group support |
| Freeride tourism agency from Zakopane 7 riding days |
Hokkaido (Niseko) | €3,400 | House rented exclusively (8 nights), no meals | Guide and agency instructors, transfers. Ski passes (approx. €70–90 per day) and flights not included. |
| Off-piste agency from Kraków 7 riding days (13-day trip) |
Hokkaido (6 resorts) | €3,360 | 3*/4* hotels (10 nights, 2 per room), breakfasts | Local JMGA guide + Polish team leader, road transfers. Flights not included. |
| UK freeride agency | Hokkaido / Honshu | €4,220 – €5,250 | 3* hotels, often without breakfast | UIAGM-licensed guides, high English-language margin |
| Alpine ski-touring agency (DACH) | Hokkaido / Central Honshu | €4,340 – €5,600 | 3/4* hotels far from the lifts | European guides, high operating costs of a Western agency |
Cost of one riding day: Freeride Transfer Club vs Alpine ski-touring agency (DACH)
Therefore, we compare the most expensive competing camp with ours. As a result, this is how the amount spent per riding day (7 riding days) translates into value and scope of services:
| Parameter / Component | Freeride Transfer Club (our camp) | Alpine ski-touring agency (DACH) | Difference / What do you gain with us? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total cost (contribution) | from €2,005 to €2,370 (excluding the Wild Card €95) |
€4,340 – €5,600 | You save from €1,970 to €3,595 (approx. 45–64% less). |
| Riding days | 7 full days | 7 days (the same riding volume assumed for comparison) | The same length of intensive riding on snow. |
| Cost of 1 riding day | approx. €286 – €339 / day | approx. €620 – €800 / day | You gain approx. €281–€514 in savings on every riding day. |
| Coaching / guides | Local licensed guides (1:6) + Polish team leader (group of 8–14) | European guides, high operating costs of a Western agency | Polish team leader and local guides at a lower contribution. |
| What the contribution includes | 8 nights (hotel by the slope, 7 with breakfasts + 1 in Tokyo), Shinkansen, onsens | 3/4* hotels far from the lifts | Breakfasts, fast access by Shinkansen and recovery in onsens included in the contribution. |
Why is Madarao Kogen better for legal freeride than the well-known resorts of Hokkaido?
Madarao has officially designated Tree Run zones. Here is a comparison of terrain, amount of snow and costs against the most popular places in Japan:
| Destination | Terrain and amount of snow | Crowds | Estimated trip cost | Pure freeride / notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Madarao & Myoko Kogen (Honshu) – our camp | Higher mountains, a huge connected area with Myoko, the largest off-piste area; heavy snowfalls from the Sea of Japan | Minimal – quiet atmosphere, no lift queues | €2,005 – €2,370 | 100% legal Tree Run – official forest zones |
| Niseko United (Hokkaido) | Lower mountains, high wind variability (upper lifts often closed) | Very large – powder tracked out 1–2 hours after a snowfall | €3,360 – €3,400 (agencies from Poland) | Limited – gate system, strict penalties for crossing the tape |
| Rusutsu Resort (Hokkaido) | Moderate altitude, steep forest sections | Growing number of tourists, fresh snow tracked out quickly | €3,360 – €3,400 (agencies from Poland) | Legal riding in designated forest zones |
| Furano Ski Resort (Hokkaido) | Bigger vertical, strict patrol rules | Moderate – crowded in freeride zones | €3,360 – €3,400 (agencies from Poland) | Written notification required / riding banned in many forest zones |
