Why Freeride Norway – the Fjord Triad?

When the local school holidays start in southern Norway, we launch our most refined three-stage escape into the wild. However, this is not an ordinary camp. Instead, it is a freeride safari through the true meccas of Norwegian off-piste.

We start classically with 3 days in Røldal. Then we drive west to Myrkdalen, a resort considered one of the biggest snow traps in Europe, where ocean fronts leave metres of fresh powder. Finally, we reach a sacred place of Scandinavian backcountry: Sogndal (Hodlekve). It is a raw, T-bar based resort hidden deep in the fjords, so families with children are simply not interested in it.

For us, however, it is paradise: sparse, frosty birch forests, pillow lines and untouched deep powder. Moreover, we navigate it with a local guide, far away from any crowds.

Snow, terrain and on-site care

We go in the second half of February – the moment when the days get longer and precipitation statistics provide a thick base of fresh snow. Thanks to the knowledge of local guides, we avoid crowded spots and reach the best lines in the area.

The contribution includes 7 days of intensive freeride, care of local guides and 8 nights (7 nights in cosy, well-equipped Norwegian hytta houses close to the off-piste zones + 1 night in a hotel near Oslo). In addition, it covers transport in a comfortable 9-seat 4×4 van with studded tyres, fuel, AutoPASS road tolls and ferry crossings. However, flights and ski passes are not included.

We stay in traditional, spacious hytta cabins close to the ski spots, so you can recover well after a full day on the slopes. Rooms are for two and, moreover, a sauna guarantees an evening of relaxation.

Why do Røldal, Myrkdalen & Sogndal in Norway beat freeride in the Alps (e.g. Chamonix / St. Anton) in the same period?

The Alps are an absolute classic, but they struggle with overcrowding and fresh snow being tracked out quickly. The table below compares the destinations by amount of snow, crowds and costs:

Destination Terrain and amount of snow Crowds Estimated trip cost Pure freeride / notes
Norway – the Fjord Triad (our camp) Cool Scandinavian snow-trap microclimate (Myrkdalen & Sogndal); deep, cold powder of the Sognefjord interior and pillows Minimal – group of 7–16, untouched terrain in the birch forests of Sogndal €1,269 – €1,500 Traditional hytta cabins, sauna, ferry crossings through the fjords, wild atmosphere
Alps (e.g. Chamonix / St. Anton) Temperate Alpine climate (frequent thaws below 1,800 m); variable snow – from powder to wind crust High – a race for first tracks, powder tracked out in 1–2 hours, lift queues Costs typical of a big resort Mass tourism, crowded restaurants
Northern Norway (Lyngen Alps) Ski touring terrain above the Arctic Circle (ski-to-sea), 3.5 h drive from Tromsø airport Low €1,620 – €1,850 (agency from Poland) Freetouring programme: touring gear and 1,000–1,600 m of ascent per day
